Colour in 19th Century Photographs (Barva na fotografiích 19. století) is a book that provides an insight into how photographic images were hand- coloured, with an emphasis on their golden age, which was the period up to the 1920s. Colouring aimed to give the monochrome images a more realistic impression of the world of colour and has been carried out from the earliest photographic techniques right up to the present. With its rich illustrations from across the entire world, the book shows the varied palette of possibilities and styles, from the ties with painting and graphical traditions to the crude creations of dilettantes. With its interdisciplinary approach, the publication demonstrates how the author combines the practices of a restorer and painter with the historical research and experiences of a historian of photography, supplemented by an appendix on the chemical and technological research.It ties in with the NTM edition on the history of photography, both colour and black-and-white.
